Olduvai Gorge
Music and lyrics by Nicholas Toth and Kathy Schick © 2013.

1.  Drive from Arusha
Past lake Manyara
Climb the escarpment
Straight through Keratu
Ngorongoro Highlands

     To Olduvai
Cradle of Humankind

2.  The great Serengeti
Three hundred-foot canyon
Time stacked in strata
Two million year history
Creatures now long gone

At Olduvai
Cradle of humankind

CHORUS
Over and over and over again
Lake levels rose and the lake levels fell
Over and over and over again
Volcanoes erupted and blanketed ash

Olduvai Gorge
I can hear the fossils calling
Olduvai Gorge
I can see the stone tools sparkling

3.  Shovel-tusked elephants
Saber-toothed lions
Giant horned buffalo
Monstrous crocodiles
Extinct forms of hominid

At Olduvai
Cradle of Humankind

4.  Places we once knew
Stone sources we once used
Fears that we once shared
Dreams that we once dared
In our African homeland

At Olduvai
Cradle of Humankind

     CHORUS
Over and over and over again
Lake levels rose and the lake levels fell
Over and over and over again
     Volcanoes erupted and blanketed ash
Over and over and over again
The animals died and became fossil bone
Over and over and over again
The industries changed that were made out of stone

     Olduvai Gorge
I can hear the fossils calling
     Olduvai Gorge
I can see the stone tools sparkling
