CARRIE NEWCOMER, SINGER/SONGWRITER
Carrie Newcomer is the vocalist in the STONE AGE INSTITUTE Band, a resident of Bloomington, Indiana, and a long-time friend of Kathy Schick and Nick Toth. She is one of America’s leading singer/songwriters and records on the Rounder Records label. She has been praised by Billboard magazine as a “soaring songstress” and has received accolades from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Acoustic Guitar, Performing Songwriter, Paste Magazine, and many others.
As the Minneapolis City Pages wrote, “Newcomer’s musing is deeply introspective, but she offers it with a poet’s sense of nuance and a folkie’s common touch, turning philosophical theory into the stuff of people’s daily lives.” Rolling Stone’s Don McLeese praised her songs and vocals “…music impresses with the bite of her intelligence, the bluesy warmth of her voice and the support of musicians who give these confessions an edgy propulsion. Rapturously tuneful, Newcomer’s material asks all the right questions and refuses to settle for easy answers.” The well-known British folk music magazine Folk Roots recognized here as “A musician, poet and performer of surprising depth and disarming humor.”
She has toured with Alison Krauss and Union Station in Europe and the U.S. Her song, “I Should’ve Known Better,” was covered by the group Nickel Creek on their Grammy-winning album, This Side. In 2008, Boston’s WUMB listed Carrie as one of the Top Most Influential Artists of the past 25 Years. In 2009 Newcomer toured India as a cultural ambassador for The American Center, the cultural outreach division of the American Embassy in India.[9] While in India, Newcomer performed concerts, visited community service projects and participated in workshops. She has recently also been recording and performing with India’s premier sarod artist, Amjad Ali Khan and his sons.
